Carbon Saving Obligation

What is the Carbon Saving Obligation?

The Carbon Saving Obligation is a UK government initiative that forms part of the Energy Company Obligation (ECO), running until October 2018. The most recent iteration, known as the ECO4 scheme, utilizes ECO4 funding to assist low-income households by covering costs associated with cavity wall insulation and solid wall insulation, which can be particularly challenging to implement.

Previously referred to as the Carbon Emissions Reduction Obligation (CERO), this initiative has seen numerous energy companies commit to supporting vulnerable households facing fuel poverty. By participating in this government energy support program, these companies aim to not only help individual households but also contribute to the overall reduction of carbon emissions.

More Information About the Carbon Saving Community Obligation (CSCO)

The Carbon Saving Community Obligation (CSCO) is a vital component of the government’s carbon emissions reduction initiative, focused on helping to decrease the country’s overall carbon footprint through the Green Deal. This government energy grant funding specifically targets low-income families, providing a range of home insulation improvements and energy-efficient solutions.

The improvements available under the CSCO include:

Cavity Wall Insulation: Enhances thermal performance and reduces heat loss.
Solid and Internal Wall Insulation: Improves energy efficiency in homes with solid walls.
Electric Storage Heaters: Replaces old, inefficient electric heating systems with modern, efficient alternatives.
Room-in-Roof Insulation: Insulates unused spaces to retain heat effectively.
Loft Insulation: Prevents heat loss through the roof, keeping your home warmer.
Air Source Heat Pumps: Utilizes renewable energy to provide efficient heating.
Solar Panels: Generates renewable energy, reducing reliance on traditional power sources.

Why Should I Apply for Carbon Saving Obligation Funding?

Much of the housing stock in the UK is older, which often presents challenges in treating cavity walls, solid walls, or loft insulation that no longer meets the Department of Energy’s standards for district heating systems. The Carbon Saving Obligation funding from the UK government is specifically aimed at addressing these issues in homes.

If your property faces these challenges, here are several reasons why you should check your eligibility today:

Frequently Asked Questions

The Carbon Saving Obligation (CSO) is a component of the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme in the UK. It requires larger energy suppliers to deliver energy-saving measures that help reduce carbon emissions in residential properties.

Eligibility typically includes low-income households, those living in fuel poverty, and individuals receiving certain benefits, such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, or Child Tax Credit. Specific eligibility criteria may vary based on the measures being offered.

The CSO covers a range of energy-saving measures aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. This includes insulation (such as cavity wall, loft, and solid wall insulation), heating upgrades, and renewable energy installations.

To apply for support under the CSO, you can contact your energy supplier or an accredited installer participating in the ECO scheme. They will assess your eligibility and guide you through the application process.

In many cases, the measures funded under the CSO are provided at no cost to eligible households. However, some households may be required to make a small contribution, depending on their financial situation and the specific measures being installed.

The duration of the application process can vary. Generally, you can expect a response within a few weeks, but it may take longer depending on the volume of applications and any additional documentation required.

If your application for support under the CSO is denied, you will typically receive reasons for the decision. You may have the option to appeal or seek advice on how to strengthen your application for future consideration.

Yes, tenants may be eligible for support under the CSO, but you will need to obtain permission from your landlord before any work can be carried out. The landlord may also have obligations to improve the energy efficiency of the property.

The CSO is funded by larger energy suppliers, who are obligated to provide a certain amount of funding for energy efficiency measures as part of their regulatory requirements. This funding helps support initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions.

You can find more information about the Carbon Saving Obligation on the official UK government website, through your energy supplier, or by consulting with accredited installers. Eco4Energy is also available to help answer any questions you may have!

Application deadlines may vary depending on the specific program and funding availability. It’s important to check with your energy supplier or installer for any relevant deadlines associated with the CSO.
